Would You Switch to a Flip Phone for 30 Days for $10k?

Well, now’s your chance, but the entry deadline is 1/31! 10 courageous Smartphone users willing to sacrifice that screen for 30 days will be awarded the following by Siggi’s Yogurt:

  • $10,000

  • Flip Phone

  • Smartphone Locked Box

  • 1 Month Pre-Paid SIM Card

  • 3 Month’s Supply of Siggi’s Yogurt

Would you do it? Would you invite your family to join you for all or part of the contest and split the 10k amongst you? My family practices occasional digital detox days in which we forgo individual digital entertainment for 24 hours. We still watch a family show or movie as we find it to be bonding and a great end-of-day cuddle opportunity. I practice 24 hours of digital detox from work-related activities and social media once a week. I start on Saturday evening around 5pm and continue until Sunday evening at the same time. It assists me in taking a fuller Sabbath rest. It safeguards my time with my family, allowing me to dedicate more of my attention to them. It helps me to test my self-control. And it keeps my phone from taking an idol position in my life. I am particularly vulnerable to allowing my screens to distract me from loving my family well because the majority of my screen use is work related. My justification: I’m using my screens as a means to provide for my family. As a recovering workaholic, that excuse can rob my family of my presence.

It intimidates me to let go of my Smartphone for 30 days. But I can admit that my Smartphone enslaves me to my work probably more than I really know. I got along just fine with my old flip phone not all that long ago, just about 14 years past. I was a Smartphone holdout. It would be good to revisit that digital freedom.

When I asked my family if they would join me for a slice of the $$$ pie, they all agreed! The kids each thought they could abstain from their individual digital entertainment for at least 5-7 of the 30 days. As a drummer and all around musician, my husband records his music on his Smartphone. He acknowledged that it would be difficult to release his device for a month, but indicated that the 10k reward was certainly motivating.

All you have to do is write an 100-500 word essay describing your reasons for being willing to tackle the challenge by January 31st. Siggi’s will then select the 10 winners who will subsequently enter into their 30 day Digital Detox. Visit their website for more details: https://hello.siggis.com/digital-detox

At the very least, it is worth a family discussion, right? Let me know how it goes.
